The bad news first: SolarCity would install the system at a cost of $138 a month for 15 years, and the amount would increase 3.5 percent each year. Also, the customer would still receive a bill from San Diego Gas & Electric Co.
Then came the benefits: The 6.8-kilowatt system would save the Taits $178 a month on their SDG&E bill. Since energy costs increase by about 5 percent a year, the amount they would save each month should slowly increase. The company handles processing and permit fees, and wouldn't charge anything to install or maintain the system for the duration of the lease.
